Investment Style Allocation Tool

Map your portfolio across value, growth, size, and quality. See your aggregate style tilts and compare them to a target mix.

Enter up to six holdings with their portfolio weights (as % of total).
Weights don’t have to sum exactly to 100%, but closer is better for interpretation.
Set a target allocation across styles to compare against your current mix.
Tip: Use fund fact sheets or Morningstar style boxes to approximate each holding’s style exposures.
Important: This tool aggregates style exposures linearly based on weights. Real-world factor models are more complex. Use this as a visualization and planning aid, not a precise factor model.

How style allocation is calculated

Each holding has a portfolio weight and style exposures. The tool multiplies each holding’s style exposures by its weight and sums across holdings to get the aggregate style mix.

1. Holding weights

For holding i:
Weight_i (decimal) = Weight%_i / 100

Example:
If a fund is 25% of your portfolio:
Weight_i = 0.25

2. Style exposures per holding

For holding i and style S (e.g., Value, Growth):
Exposure_{i,S} (decimal) = Exposure%_{i,S} / 100

Example:
If a fund is 60% value and 40% growth:
Exposure_{i,Value} = 0.60
Exposure_{i,Growth} = 0.40

3. Aggregate style mix

Aggregate exposure to style S:
Agg_S = Σ (Weight_i × Exposure_{i,S}) over all holdings

Convert to percentage:
Agg%_S = Agg_S × 100

This is a simple weighted average of style exposures across your holdings.

4. Comparing to target

Deviation for style S:
Deviation_S = Agg%_S − Target%_S

Positive deviations mean you’re more tilted toward that style than your target; negative deviations mean you’re underweight.

Understanding your style tilts

Style tilts can drive long-term performance and risk. A portfolio heavily tilted to growth or small-cap may be more volatile but offer higher expected returns. A value or quality tilt may behave differently across cycles.

Worked example

Imagine a portfolio with three holdings:

  • Broad US index fund (60% weight, neutral style)
  • Value fund (25% weight, 80% value, 20% growth)
  • Small-cap growth fund (15% weight, 20% value, 80% growth, 70% small-cap)

The tool will show your aggregate value vs growth and size tilts. You might discover that you’re more growth-tilted than you thought, or that small-cap exposure is concentrated in one fund.

Using the results

If your style mix is far from your target, you can adjust weights or choose different funds. If you don’t have a target yet, you can use the tool to explore how different mixes feel and how they might behave.

Remember that styles are just one lens. Diversification across regions, sectors, and asset classes also matters. This tool focuses on style tilts to make them visible and concrete.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I leave some style fields blank?

Yes. Blank exposures are treated as 0 for that style. You can fill them in later as you refine your inputs.

Do exposures have to sum to 100%?

No. Some styles overlap. This tool doesn’t enforce a sum constraint; it simply aggregates each style dimension independently.

Can I export the style breakdown?

Yes. Use the Export CSV button to download the holdings and aggregate style mix for further analysis.

Does this replace professional factor analysis?

No. It’s a simplified view. Professional factor models use more detailed data and statistics.
